Getting to know the interviewers a little better will not only make you more comfortable, but it will also make it easier for you to strike up small talk about anything you have in common- whether its a shared alma mater or the fact that you both own rescue dogs.2. Assemble a survival kit.Oftentimes job interviews can feel like one of those dreaded what can go wrong, will go wrong scenarios. But, few people talk about how you begin an interview. As it turns out, that might matter more.Some statistics state that bosses know within 90 seconds of an interview if theyll hire someone. On the slightly less extreme side, a majority of hiring managers state that they make a decision about a candidate within 5 to 15 minutes of the interview beginning. So, while you might have a little more time than a minute and a half to be impressive, its still important that you maximize that early portion of your interview.Start with an engaging story or make sure that you play up your fruchtwein relevant skills and qualifications early on. When it comes to interviewing, you dont want to bury the lead.4. Remember your body language.Its easy to focus solely on the words you use to answer interview questions, but its important that you remember that your nonverbal cues often say more than your words.Of course, you dont want to be chewing your nails or fidgeting in your seat. However, theres another nonverbal cue that people tend to lose sight of (pun intended) when theyre nervous eye contact.Maintaining eye contact will help you connect to that employer, while also portraying your confidence. Granted, some members of the Gen Y workforce have a difficult time adjusting to employment, but others bring skills that should be emulated. Not all Gen Y employees are the same, and it is a mistake to paint them all with the same brush. The Downside ofthe Gen Y Employee They perceive themselves as the smartest and the best.Even though they achieved a GPA of 3.0 in their less than rigorous degree programs, Mom and Dad lauded them as super smart and forgave the academic grade.Gen Y workers think they are good at everything and everything should come easily. This belief created children who werent prepared for a rigorous college program. Many students arrived unprepared with the appropriate background for degree programs that employers need.This created a plethora of young adults now gra duating with urban planning, gender and ethnic studies, humanities, arts and sciences, and psychology degrees. Meanwhile, theres a dearth of students with computer science, science, healthcare, and math skills. They feel entitled to a lot of money, quick promotions, and only positive reinforcement. How many applications from graduating, potential workers have you seen who actually had real jobs? While many have jobs or internships listed on their resumes, think about what happened during all those semesters when nothing was going on. How many potential internships were not pursued? However much voluntary campus and civic work could have been undertaken but wasnt? If questioned, many will say that college is their last real chance to have fun before becoming an adult and being weighed down with responsibilities. On the other hand, the college years should be a year-round, year after year, learning opportunity- and one in which students try different things in order to discover their passion. This generation was tethered to their parents by cell phones, text messages, and constant oversight.Gen Y is not the first generation of children who were not set free by their parents in the morning and told to come home when the streetlights came on. And while we live in a more dangerous world than one or two generations ago, being untethered is a chance to learn responsibility.This creates a scenario in which managers are expected to give daily feedback and praise within a workplace structure. The Upside of the Gen Y Employee Gen Y is very tech-savvy. BecauseGen Y grew up with technology, they can perform their jobs better. Armed with smartphones, laptops, and other gadgets, this generation is plugged in 24/7 and can work from anywhere. They like to communicate through email, text messaging, and whatever new social media platform (i.e., Twitter, Instagram) friends and colleagues are using.They are family-oriented.The fast-track lifestyle has lost much of its appeal for this Gen Y. The members of this generation are willing to trade high pay for fewer billable hours,flexible schedules,and a better work/life balance. They still get the job done, theyre just more satisfied overall because their life is not ruled by work They are achievement-oriented.Nurtured and pampered by parents who didnt want to make the mistakes of the previous generation, Gen Ys are confident and have high expectations of their employers. They arent afraid to question authority and want meaningful work.Gen Y is all about the team. While growing up, most Gen Y boys and girls participated in team sports, and were active participants in various group activities, whether it was soccer or ballet. Because of this, they are comfortable with- and value- teamwork and seek the eingabe and affirmation of others. They are the true no-person-left-behind generation, always showing loyal and committed. They truly want to be included and involved at work. The Gen Y worker likes to job-hop. A potential downside of the Gen Y worker is that it is not uncommon for them to stay with a firm for only two or three years before moving on to a position they think is better. But, dont discount this as a negative. These young employees bring with them a variety of experiences from multiple jobs and companies. They have been exposed to different cultures and tend to get along with people from all backgrounds.

Article II of the United States Military Code of ConductArticle II of the United States Military Code of ConductThere are six short and easy to rememberArticles of the Code of Conduct. In fact, any military members first week of basic training will require remembering the six articles of the Code of Conduct and recite them verbatim to an instructor in a stressful environment.If you are considering joining the military, read these and put them to memory as you will grow from them into an American member of the Armed Forces. Specifically, Article II is the following I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist. What this means is members of the Armed Forces may never surrender voluntarily. Even when isolated and no longer able to inflict casualties on the enemy or otherwise defend themselves, it is their duty to evade capture and rejoin the nearest friendly force. Surrender is the w illful act of members of the Armed Forces turning themselves over to enemy forces when elend required by utmost necessity or extremity. Surrender is always dishonorable and never allowed. When there is no chance for meaningful resistance, evasion is impossible, and further fighting would lead to their death with no significant loss to the enemy, members of Armed Forces should view themselves as captured against their will versus a circumstance that is seen as voluntarily surrendering. They must remember that the capture was dictated by the futility of the situation and overwhelming enemy strengths. In this case, capture is notlage dishonorable. The responsibility and authority of a commander never extend to the surrender of command, even if isolated, cut off, or surrounded, while the unit has a reasonable power to resist, break out, or evade to rejoin friendly forces. Here is what military personnel need to know, specifically, tafelgeschirr members should Understand that when they a re cut off, shot down, or otherwise isolated in enemy-controlled territory, they must make every effort to avoid capture. The courses of action available include concealment until recovered by friendly rescue forces, evasive travel to a friendly or neutral territory, and evasive travel to other prebriefed areas.Understand that capture does not constitute a dishonorable act if the service member has exhausted all reasonable means of avoiding it and the only alternative is death or serious bodily injury. Understand and be confident in their ability to stay alive using survival skills while evading, the procedures and techniques of rescue by search and recovery forces, and the procedures for properly using specified evasion destinations. Special Provisions for Medical Personnel Chaplains No additional flexibility. However, medical personnel and chaplains are subject to lawful capture. They may only resort to arms in self-defense or in defense of the wounded and sick in their charg e when attacked in violation of the Geneva Convention. They must refrain from all aggressive action and may not use force to prevent their capture or that of their unit by the enemy. It is, on the other hand, perfectly legitimate for a medical unit to withdraw in the face of the enemy. The Articles Article I-I am an American, fighting in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.Article II-I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist.Article III-If I am captured I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and to aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy. Article IV-If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me and will back them up in every way.Article V-When questioned, should I become aprisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies or harmful to their cause. Article VI-I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. To Engineer Is Human: The Role of Failure in Successful Design By Henry Petroski In this book, and other writings, Petroski emphasizes the importance of studying and understanding design failures as a means to creating better designs. This book cites many well-known examples of engineering failures such as the Hyatt Regency skywalk, the Mianus River bridge collapse, and the DC-10 engine servicing procedure. However, the main message of the book is that failures may be initiated by factors that were not considered in the original design, or not re-evaluated as designs were optimized or changed. Particularly now, as our design analysis and visualization tools become increasingly refined and precise, Petroskis book reminds us that no computer tool can ever replace critical thinking on the part of an engineer. - Allen H. Hoffman, professor of mechanical engineering, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance By Robert Pirsig Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance is arguably one of the most important books written in the 20th century. Although published over 40 years ago, it remains highly relevant today as a key volume on any mechanical engineers bookshelf. Conceived and written well before the formalized introduction of quality management and standards, Robert Pirsig asks the question, What is quality?a question that ultimately literally drove him insane. Written in narrative form, this book has multiple layers. On the surface, it is the story of a father (the author) on a motorcycle trip with his 12-year-old son. As the journey unfolds, the second layer of the book is revealed as the author comes to terms with a ghost named Phaedrus, who is his former personality prior to his receiving electroshock therapy, which was the ultimate downward spiral into insanity. As the story of Phaedrus is slowly becomes known, the third layer of the book is also revealed, which is a journey into the philosophical q uestions that remain relevant today: Why does technology alienate rather than unify society? What is quality, and if we cant define it, how do we live a high-quality life? This book represents a journey upon which all mechanical engineers should embark. - Anthony J. Marchese, professor of mechanical engineering, Colorado State University The Design of Everyday Things By Donald Norman Every mechanical engineer should have a copy of Don Normans terrific book, The Design of Everyday Things. This book is a classic. Its been through several editions, yet each time I read it I come away with insights that are new, fresh, and important. This is because the book is only partly about design; it is also about people and the ways that people use, or struggle to use, simple, familiar products. Using consumer products such as doors, faucets, and keypads as examples, Norman asks us to step back from our problem-solving work from time to time and consider how people will use or maintain the things that we have created. The examples of poor design are hilarious and Normans guidelines for good design are both simple and profound. The Design of Everyday Things can change the way we think about the products we use, and about the part we play in creating new products. - Jeffrey A. The process can be stressful for employers too especially if you conduct interviews infrequently. Or perhaps youre new new to recruiting. Both can make it difficult to conduct interviews with ease. I used to get all nervous before I interviewed someone and nine times out of 10 would fall into chat mode where I wouldnt ask anything about the job and more or less found out that they liked cats or had family in the area and thats it, says Jayca Pike, marketing director at Breezy HR. Good interviewing starts with a clear vision of the role you need to fill. Its also requires having an awareness of how to influence the process in constructive, stress-free way. In essence, here are the five golden rules to better interview outcomes, including one that Pike uses today to run effective interviews: 1) Understand what youre looking for 2) Curate questions that apply to all candidates 3) Take time to destress before the interview 4) Treat yourself and applicants with kindness 5) Share your concerns openly Lets take a deeper dive into these five steps. 1. Get clarity about the role and the questions you want to ask. When Sabrina Balmick, marketing manager at ACA Talent, hired a marketing specialist last year, she first developed a job description and candidate profile, then used it to write interview questions. Because it was an entry-level role, I wanted to explore things like team work, attitude and analytic skills and crafted questions based on those topics, she says. You can also refer back to your candidate and job profile if you need clarification during the interview. 2. Use a consistent interview process for everyone. If youre feeling frazzled planning your interview, create a structure where you use the same questions and ratings for every job candidate. Pike switched from being a nervous interviewer to a confident one after she went to work for an employer who used consistent interview process. The mandate from HR was like: Ask these 10 questions. Grade each answer. You have 30 minutes go! she says. It sounds a cold and corporate, but in reality, I could run an effective interview that way. Do press candidates by asking follow-up questions about any unclear or open-ended responses. These answers often yield great insights about a candidates work style or personality, and may create further lines of communication, Balmick says. 3. De-stress before interviews. Conducting interviews can be nerve wracking, even for seasoned professionals, so take time before each interview to clear your mind and calm your nerves, says Jason Hill, CEO of boutique consulting firm Sound Advice Consulting Services. The best way for me to get in the right mode is to get mentally prepared. I listen to some of my favorite music and let go, or I meditate and focus for a few minutes with no distractions. Check in with yourself before heading into the interview and return to your plan if you start feeling overwhelmed. As with the candidate, a little self-care goes a long way to clear your mind and build self-awareness. 4. Focus on the candidate rather your fear. Dont monitor your racing heart or churning stomach. Instead, focus on reducing the job seekers comfort. Jana Tulloch, CPHR, a human resources professional at training firm DevelopIntelligence, positions herself as the job-seekers ally in the room. She opens the conversation with positive statements: Im glad youre here. Your resume was impressive. Im looking forward to learning more. To put candidates at ease, she tells them what to expect: how long the interview will last, the types of interview questions asked and why everyone will take notes. Tullock even tells job seekers that if they if they draw a blank, they can skip a question and come back to it. Go for literal comfort, too. Do your interviews in the coziest place in your office. Avoid overly hot, cold, or dark spaces. Everyone feels less tense when theyre comfortable. 5. Be direct without being confrontational. When you avoid a difficult topic its often because it makes you uncomfortable and even tense. But not sharing your concerns with the job seeker denies them the chance to respond to them. Ted Bagley, senior talent manager at Influitive, an advocate marketing firm, regularly shares his doubts with candidates and asks them how theyll address challenges. I did this to a candidate in a phone interview, and he addressed my concerns, Bagley says. We had a follow-up interview in person a few days later, and he gave me a well-thought-out action plan that provided steps on how he was planning on working through my objections. Bagley said this showed that the candidate had a clear plan to overcome them and would be coachable the biggest thing I look for in new hires. The takeaway: Be direct and honest with candidates about your concerns. Avoid using negative language or jumping to assumptions. This approach can help you learn something new about the candidates problem-solving skills.

Why You Should Take a Step Back in Your Career - The Muse Why You Should Take a Step Back in Your Career I’d spent most of my career working toward becoming an HR Director, and I was well on my way to achieving that goal. But, man, was I unhappy. And I know- we’ve all found ourselves in jobs that aren’t very fulfilling, but this was something more. I was downright miserable. I struggled to get out of bed, I was grumpy all the time, and it took every ounce of energy I had to get through a day at the office. After months of muddling through, I had to face up to a radical idea: Maybe this wasn’t the right path for me. But how would I figure out what was without quitting my job and having space to think? Along those same lines, how could I quit my job when I had bills to pay, a dog to feed, and a husband who was supportive of my decision to explore a new career path, but rightfully concerned about how we’d manage financially. Knowing that I couldn’t last in my role much longer, we sat down and took a hard look at our budget and our savings. What could we do without? How much of our modest savings could we use to supplement my unemployment? We decided that we had enough saved up to cover about three months of time off. And, just to be safe, I lined up a part-time remote role that would supplement my income while allowing space for me to job search. I also made a timeline for myself. If I hadn’t figured things out within three months, I would go back to human resources. I don’t want to downplay how scary or financially risky this choice was. I gave it a lot of thought, and it took some serious planning. It’s not something that everyone can do. I know that I was lucky to be in the situation I was in. And there’s no way I could’ve done it without a supportive partner (and I do mean that both emotionally and financially), as well as a savings account. Not to mention, quitting my job and essentially walking away from the career I’d spent a decade building was really disorienting. How could I now not want something I’d spent so long working toward? Even harder than wrapping my head around that was explaining this choice to my friends and family. Some of the people I was closest to just didn’t understand, and I struggled with feeling like I’d made a huge mistake. I kept wondering, was I crazy to do this? This is all to say that leaning into my career pause took a little time- both to explain to others, but also to justify to myself. But eventually, I started pushing myself to try new things and make the most of my time off. I started practicing yoga. I took up bike riding. I read inspiring books about people pursuing their passions. But I didn’t stop there. I made a list of the things I loved to do and thought a lot about how I could use my existing skills in new ways. I put myself out there, offering resume writing and career consulting services to my network and seeking out contract recruiting gigs. Before I knew it, I was a freelance recruiter and had started a small resume writing business. My side hustles were doing well enough that three months away from the HR world turned into a year. I began to wonder what else I could do. With each new experience, I became braver. I found myself saying yes to crazy things that I would never have done before. Like skydiving, a 40-mile charity bike ride, trekking through Patagonia, and selling almost all my worldly belongings to move onto a boat I can’t stress enough how out of character these choices would’ve been for me just a year or two ago. Before quitting my job, I was not a risk taker. Now, I’m kind of in love with embracing things that scare me. The facts are that the most interesting and exciting things that I’ve experienced since taking a step back from my career are all a direct result of embracing change. I’ve learned that life can be an adventure, but only if you stop playing it safe all the time. You don’t need to quit your job to change the trajectory of your life. Just try making one change, then another and another. Maybe you self-publish an opinion piece on LinkedIn or start volunteering at a nonprofit that supports a cause you’re passionate about. Even something as simple as challenging yourself to speak up more at work or offering to plan your next department gathering can begin to shift your mindset. Every time you experience yourself trying something new, you’ll get a little braver. And who knows where that will take you?

But the most important job descriptions may be the ones you create yourself, when you’re describing past positions on your resume. Job descriptions show prospective employers what you have accomplished in the positions youve held. They also provide a synopsis of your experience and skills. Well-written descriptions for each job you have held will help get your resume noticed and selected for interviews. Whats the best way to write attention-grabbing job descriptions? Before you start adding job descriptions to your resume, you may want to make a list of accomplishments at each of your jobs. This will prepare you for writing your resume. Focus on Skills and Achievements After you have written a job description, look for ways to make your explanation more concise. Make an effort to create effective impact statements. Highlight skills and achievements, providing only enough detail to support your premises. Try to edit out pronouns and articles. Begin phrases or sentences with verbs. Choose strong words- resume action words like “initiated” and “supervised” are powerful and show that you’ve made an impact on your team. If you will be submitting resumes to organizations that scan them into searchable computer databases, include as many industry and job-specific keywords as possible. When searching databases for potential candidates, employers seek resumes with the greatest number of hits on keywords. Keywords are most often nouns, e.g. “customer service” or “computer skills.” To use keywords most effectively, be specific, use as many as possible, and sprinkle them throughout your resume.   Be Selective About What You Include Your resume isn’t your entire work history, and you don’t need to include every duty for each role. Determine the most relevant information by putting yourself in your potential employers position: Will this information help convince the employer that you are a worthwhile candidate to interview? You do not have to include every responsibility you ever had. Group together similar tasks. For instance, rather than listing Answered phones and Responded to customer emails in two bullet points, you can combine and say, Resolved customer issues through phone, email, and chat conversations. Prioritize Job Description Information Next, think about prioritizing the information you provide in each description. Present details that are of the greatest interest to potential employers first. For example, consider the candidate seeking a job in interior design. The resume might reflect a retail experience in which 75 percent  of the candidates time was spent on the sales floor, and 25 percent  was spent designing window and floor displays. Priority, determined by relevance to the employer, dictates that design of window and floor displays should be listed before sales. Sales Associate Sales Associate, Retail USA, New York, NY October, 20XX - PresentDesigned all large windows using color as the primary focus.Created engaging point-of-purchase displays for slow moving small items; increased sales of these items by 30 percent.Organized floor displays to maximize space and call attention to latest merchandise.Utilized strong interpersonal and communications skills to serve customers; received employee of the month award twice. Expand Bottom line: Highlight your most relevant qualifications for the job by listing them first in the job description. Quantify Your Accomplishments Quantify as much information as you can (numbers, dollar signs, percentages can all help to make your case). A bullet point that reads Grew traffic 35 percent  year-over-year is more impressive- and informative- than one that reads simply Improved traffic. Nearly any description, for any job, can be enhanced through the use of numbers. A waitress might start out with the description Took customer orders and delivered food. But a quantified description saying, Served customers in an upscale 100-seat restaurant, provides much more insight.
